Wow, The Book Is Here!

12-year-old Shell Wakefield finds her friend Leaves the Red Fox just outside the forest ….

Shell: Oh, my gosh! Leaves, it’s finally happened!

Leaves: Hm? What? I’ve just been enjoying all the wild wind out here … blowing leaves around. Blowing me around!

Shell: That’s just it. I think Jane has–

Leaves: “Blown it?” ha ha.

Shell: No! Of course not. Or at least, I hope not …

Leaves (brushing against her hand): What is it, Shell? You seem pretty rattled.

Shell: Well, it’s just that …

Leaves: Just what?

Shell (deep breath): Jane’s just released her book, Because of The Red Fox. But it’s really our book, isn’t it.

Leaves merely nods.

Leaves (after a silent minute): Does that bother you?

Shell: Does it bother you?

Leaves: No, of course not. I’ve said all along that I’m “read”.

Shell shakes her head.

Shell: Well, then. I may as well get used to … fame … or something. To being “read”.

Leaves: It’s okay, Shell. You’ve been read all along. And, to all of you reading this post, thank you for your interest in Shell, myself, and the rest of the gang. Be sure to download the free three chapter preview of our book, I don’t show up in an obvious way in that excerpt, but I’m definitely there.

Shell (waving to all of you): If you get the book, do let us know what you think. Bye for now, everyone!  This is Shell Wakefield and Leaves the Red Fox signing off to take a look at that stack of books Jane is carrying under her arm …

You are invited!

When: Saturday, July 27, 2013

Time: 7-9:30PM

Where: Plain Old Farm (contact us for location)

Cost: None! Just bring yourself, family, friends. We invite you to bring a snack, dessert, or drink to share. See the end of this post for what else you might bring.

If you plan to come, or might come, please RSVP.

About the Event:

Because Of The Red Fox is close to publication!  I’m also about to celebrate a significant birthday (hint: how many stars are on our US flag?). I have vowed to family and friends, and now to all of you, that my manuscript will be complete by this event. All that will  be left to do will be copy-edits and some book production miscellany. The story itself will be done. No more revisions!

So, if you happen to be on an enchanted island in Puget Sound, come join us! The first hour will be devoted to stepping into the world of the Red Fox. I’ll read some from the book and share some tales. We’ll have music and some magical nature fun. We’ll also enjoy yummy food and good company around a lovely fire in the beautiful outdoors amidst some amazing and friendly trees.

My mom, Joyce Kiefer, who is a published poet and writer and with whom I share a birthday (she is turning a significant age as well) will share a couple of poems. We’ll have other surprises, too, as this event is very much a celebration of the magic of life here on the island and of my communities, all of which are woven into my novel in some form or another.

It promises to be a special evening, one that will be even more inspiring if you join us!

Please also bring: a chair or blanket and anything else you might need to be comfortable outside. If you can, please bring your own plates, utensils, & cups. Do you play an instrument? Tell stories? Want to share a song? We’ll have time for stories, music games, and more from all of us.

I hope you can come!

Zzzt? Where Are We?

Greetings, dear Readers!

It’s been quite some time since I wrote. Here’s an update on Because Of The Red Fox.

I passed the winter musing on the plot. I’ve told chunks of the story to a friend, a circle of storytellers, to the trees, the herbs in my garden. I’ve scoured the tale, figuring out bits that I hadn’t really understood.

I’ve scheduled a book reading for July 27. I’m turning 50 near the end of July, and I will have this book out by then!

I’ve made a schedule, and now I’m updating my text.

Shell, Leaves, Santa, Annie, Govan and the rest are all in varying states of impatience. Here’s the current cover:

It will likely change some, but it’s well on its way!

Thanks for your patience!
